psp7 hangs on start

X-posted to other Tribes...

So we use PaintShop Pro 7 at work; nothing sophisticated, basic photo-manipulation (need to document phases-of-work out in the field). Functionally, PSP is overkill (even at 4-versions-old), but we've got it so we use it.

I've got a new installation of PSP7 which, upon launch, just seems to hang.

Win XP Pro/sp2.

The pointer goes to hourglass for a few seconds (as you'd expect given a big app). But the app never pops the window to the screen, nor to the menubar at the bottom. Taskmanager sees "psp.exe" in the process-list (where it's VERY busy, taking up a bunch of CPU-time), but it never appears on the Applications list.

To the naive user, it looks like nothing has happened; task-manager shows that it's running & using nontrivial amounts of CPU. But it never gets functional.

Same functionality whether I click on an image-file (to open it via PSP), or launch PSP as itself, without an image. Same if I uninstall/reinstall.

If I login as Administrator... boom, it works.

"Fine," sez I, "... a screwy permissions problem." So I set ordinary users and power users to run PSP wih full priv's. No joy. "WTFO?"

Any tips/advice welcome!

Did you give those users admin rights to the box, or just the application itself ?

If you haven't already give one of the users full admin rights, and see what that does.

      Both.

That is, the app runs with full privilege (gawd, I hate to) ... Read/write/delete/change/take_ownership... The whole ball o' wax.

User is in the Administrators group, too (and, I hate *that*).

<SIGH> yet still... "there is no joy in Mudville..."

      Thanks! Keep suggesting...

Steve, PSP7 uses likages to it's own internal plug-ins and java during the initial program call. Whenever I see huge amounts of CPU usage in a program startup I automatically look to see what helper apps it's trying to call to. You may want to expand those permissions to the folder containing the app and the plug-ins and also java so that they have full permissions to spawn the console. Just a thought.

Good luck. Let us know how it turns out.

        Love and light, dear ones.

Some programs have piss poor installers and only write the registry settings to the account the program was installed under and not all users.

When this happens the programs either fail to run, lock up, or simple open and close. Some are sauve enough to know they are broken and give you a warning message. Many others do not though and you will be left wondering whats up.

This problem really started cropping up on WinXP systems when trying to install older Win2k/Win9x designed apps.

Give the systems user account Admin rights, log in as that user and reinstall the software and verify it works.

Once you verify it works, remove the users admin rights and test again.

If the program still works then your issue is related to the installer and not your system settings.

You haven't posted if you got this to work before the holidays...

Anyway, try Process Monitor from Mark Russinovich and Bryce Cogswell (The Sysinternals guys, but M$ bought them up like they buy up everything that's cool.) Then you can see what dlls and assorted crap PSP is trying to load and where it's getting stuck without delving into stack and hex strings only a programmer could love... (under System Information) And since this will probably turn out to be a perms issue, you might like AccessChk too. (under Security Utilities)

If you're always doing admin work on M$ boxen, then chances are you have all the Sysinternals stuff anyway; if not, shh, just pretend you did and go grab it all.

Just an update... Thanks to all suggestors!

The user simply moved over to Photoshop Elements.

PSP-7 issues remain unresolved, but are a MUCH lower priority now. :-/
